I believe Patiti Point and South Beach continue to be undervalued by Timaru District Council, while ordinary people attach a lot of value to it. The main threat to the semi-natural and pleasant coastal environment comes from the port. With the decline in shipping it is possible the port will diversify to survive as an entity. It is easier to site new developments on South Beach than it is to consolidate unused spaces within the existing port industrial zone. Mitigating this threat is the next IPCC report, due in 2013.
